I think what kept Mr. Jobs ahead of the pack is the fact that he was UNAFRAID. He took strides that others only dreamed of. I think most of all, I've learned from Mr. Jobs not to be ashamed of what I believe!

Steve Jobs is a man with great vision and an inspiration to the whole design world. Apple is one of those big companies where just one man is the face of the company. But I think Steve is already leaving since 2003. He was quite aware that Apple would have to do without him one day. I'm sure there is a lot of vision, knowledge, innovation and guts at Apple and that will not disappear with Steve Jobs leaving the company.

The best reflection I have to contribute to this great article (and I totally agree with Pat's comment) is that no matter where and how Steve Job started, his greatest legacy is to not fall into compacency. He had every right to become "corporate" and deliver what shareholders and boards of directors expected but he didn't. As a result, his company thrived.

Many companies who once had innovative products are now irrelevant. Motorola, Research In Motion, Dell, .

What Steve Jobs epitomizes is in the phrase "Do what you love and success will find you". While I am sure that Jobs was concerened about profit, market share and global dominance, that was all always a by-product of his passion for being innovative.

For Steve, I am sure his greatest legacy will be his keen ability to tap into people's souls, desires and emotions.

Thanks Steve for changing the world for the better. Godspeed.

BUT people! HE IS STILL ALIVE!

some people are talking like he's already dead!!

He didn't HAD a way of relating to the consumer, Steve Jobs HAS a way of relating to the consumer.

He WAS no vionary, he IS one and he IS an innovator

hats off to steve, I have had 1 computer since my final year of art school which was 6 years ago no virus protection, no service packages nothing and the only thing I need is more HD space my friends have all been through at least 3 computers in the same time....

All markets are now shift from consumerism to a quality product market.. people will pay more if they know they are getting quality.. Best $4000 I ever spent :)

Best wishes to steve. You will be missed!

Steve Jobs had a way of relating to the consumer. You never felt as though he ran this large company pushing products at consumers. His actions and demeanor came off in a way that he felt like a buddy of yours who would say "check this out... I thought of something you might like." There is connection with him that strikes a personal nerve in a way no other CEO seems to have over consumers. It's true that I felt sadden to hear the news. Not because I was concerned for Apple, but more because it confirmed that he must really be sick. For someone with his drive to step away... something is going on with his health and thus we all hope the best for him.

It was inevitable the "will Apple be the same" debate would soon follow. Steve Jobs was not only a great visionary, he also surrounded himself with very smart and talented people. I could only assume that they were all great mentors for each other and thus the magic that Steve brought to the table was instilled in his colleagues. So will Apple be the same? Yes and No. For me personally, I am more concerned with weather a wonderful inspiring person is ok.

Great post, thanks for the inspiring words and thanks so much to Steve. I was thinking this morning how I idolized Steve from middle school spending hours in front of my Apple ][. But only today did I realize that much of it was for the wrong reasons. For example I credit Steve as a role model of one who is passionate about technology and his hobbies. But as @Pat pointed out Steve transformed himself into a master of design and to what end I can only think is the vision of someone "using" or "interacting" with his creations. Because now that I think about it what I will always remember about Apple products (touched by Steve) is the great experiences I had using them. He's a visionary and a master but not of technology of design and experience. Probably will rival those masters of the pre-war "Streamlining Movement." I hope I speak on behalf of many when I say thanks Steve, you will be missed.

Outstanding...as usual. What Steve reinforces for me is that, as a manager, it's OK to worry about the details. That striving for perfection is not a weakness, as so many would have you believe, but a strength. That form and function must work together—not one over the other.
